Essence Series These encaustic
paintings are the newest pieces of my work. Encaustic
painting is an extremely durable medium used for over 2,000
years. It is the same process used by the ancient Greek and
Egyptian artists to paint portraits on mummy cases. The
paint is made by combining pigment, damar resin, and
beeswax. The word encaustic comes from the Greek word meaning
to burn in, since the paint is heated to a liquid state on a warmed
palette and applied hot, with periodic fusing between the layers of
paint. As you can see, the resulting colors have a
translucent, almost ethereal quality, and express the very
